Numerical Modelling of Optical Trapping

چکیده

Optical trapping is a widely used technique, with many important applications in biology and metrology. Complete modelling of trapping requires calculation of optical forces, primarily a scattering problem, and nonoptical forces. The T-matrix method is used to calculate forces acting on spheroidal and cylindrical particles. Preprint of: T. A. Nieminen, H. Rubinsztein-Dunlop, N. R. Heckenberg and A. I. Comparative numerical studies of ion traps with integrated optical cavities

We study a range of radio-frequency ion trap geometries and investigate the effect of integrating dielectric cavity mirrors on their trapping potential using numerical modelling. We compare five different ion trap geometries with the aim to identify ion trap and cavity configurations that are best suited for achieving small cavity volumes and thus large ion-photon coupling as required for scala...

Trapping of low-index microparticles in an optical vortex

The equilibrium position of a low-index particle in an optical-vortex trap was experimentally measured for two different systems: a buoyant hollow glass sphere in water and a density-matched water droplet in acetophenone. Vortex traps are the only known static, single-beam configurations allowing three-dimensional trapping of such particles in the size range of 2–50 mm. The trap consists of a s...

Numerical analysis of an optical nanoscale particles trapping device based on a slotted nanobeam cavity

A slotted nanobeam cavity (SNC) is utilized to trap a polystyrene (PS) particle with a radius of only 2 nm. The carefully designed SNC shows an ultrahigh Q factor of 4.5 × 107 while maintaining a small mode volume of 0.067(λ/nwater)3. Strongly enhanced optical trapping force is numerically demonstrated when the 2 nm PS particle is introduced into the central, slotted part of the SNC. In the ver...

Design of nanoslotted photonic crystal waveguide cavities for single nanoparticle trapping and detection

We design and numerically simulate a photonic crystal waveguide cavity with a nanoslot structure for single nanoparticle trapping. A 135x enhancement of optical gradient trapping force compared to plain waveguide trapping devices has been achieved. ©2009 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (350.4855) Optical tweezers or optical manipulation; (350.4238) Nanophotonics and photonic crystals

Focused-Laguerre-Gaussian 3D-Trapping and Spanner at Low Numerical Aperture

Stable 3D micromanipulation by light requires that gradient force overcome axial scattering force introduced by an objective lens. Although high numerical aperture (NA) objective lenses in conventional optical tweezers could match the requirement, the dramatic limited axial working range and a narrow view field draw back the application seriously. With purpose to improve the application of micr...
